Hi,

I have to replace my fuel pump. I just would like some advise please. Should I take it to a specialist or can I do it my self? A buddy of mine is willing to help me out, he is mechanically savvy. Also I have the proper how to instructions for tank removal. I also picked up a new fuel filter.

Any and all comments, advise or tips will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

I assume it would be fairly straight forward. I have a project Cooper '94 SPi with presumably the same pump and its just bolted in. You would no doubt need a gasket to seal it off again but don't quote me on it as I've never actually taken it out. It will look a lot less daunting once your tank is out though, the only think I would say about getting the tank out is that the seal/grommet is a bleeding tight fit in mine, so you may need another just incase you butcher it. Cheap from minispares though so not too much of a problem.

I see you are in Canada, minispares may not be the best option! haha I'm sure you have local suppliers though, maybe mini mania.

Hi from Sheffield, UK, by the way!

Somebody had posted this a while ago that might be worth investigating..... You will also need the strainer of a suitable size for the MIni fuel tank for the inlet of the pump.

"SPI Fuel Pump

I just posted on the minimania.com forum my experience this past weekend replacing a 1993 mini SPi fuel pump with a US substitute. It worked perfectly for about 82USD. It took only about an hour to do and saved me 450 dollars. (A rover pump here in the US is about $550. USD and a month wait to get it. It cross referenced to a 1990 3.0L FI Dodge Caravan."
