Bung it up with a screw. There should have been one in the K+N kit i think.

Yup the red hose should be plugged with a screw included in the kit, but any screw of the correct diameter will do.

What are they actually for?

The kit for the SPi should look like this:
Note the little screw. That goes in to plug the line.

Scroll down and see the bit about Plugging up line. Heres the pictures.

The K&N has no warm air system therefore the Red capilary is blocked off usualy with a screw suppied in the kit and is usualy tied back somewhere in the engine bay.

Not got a red hose . The one from ECU to connector and the one from connector are both yellow. Would it be easier to plug the one from ECU ? That would eliminate the joins at connector thing?

You can't bung up the ones to the ecu, it needs to read engine vacuum. The red hose should connect to the back of the inlet manifold where it is tight up against the bulkhead, there are two tapping points, one for the ecu and one for the red hose if I remember correctly. Maybe the red hose has fallen off, if so put some small diameter pipe on it and bung the end up.

So just to clarify ( regardless of colours- because mine seem to be wrong)
One pipe does from ECU to manifold connector near bulkhead then a second goes from there and needs to be blocked off. These pipes need to be in good nick and not leaking.

That is really helpful !

That's correct.

not quite correct.
one pipe from the ecu to the fuel trap (black match box sized plastic box). then another from the fuel trap to manifold.
You then have another coming from the manifold (should be red from the start) that is the one you bung.

^ this is correct. You want the one coming out of the right hand side of the inlet manifold.
