Ive just stripped one of my front hubs and managed to remove the ball joints top and bottom and noticed the little spring is missing off the lower balljoint, i have the new ball joints ready to go back on which include the spring but was wondering is it needed and if so why isnt they one on my old one, I think thry are the original ball joints aswell, its a 1985 if that helps.

Yes it is needed, you need to shim it without the spring then put it in after it's been shimmed. (I think)

okay thanks was wondering why it wasnt in before as i think it was the original balljoint aswell
