right my new battery has gone dead its brand new and i think something has run it down. i have put a new one on today and tested when engine is running and it was putting 1253 threw the electric tester so alternator must be working? it a standard alternator not a high out put one.

also when my lights are on the hazards dont work?

and i took it for a drive today and it started spluttering if i went to put my foot down? if i just take it easy its fine. also it happend once when i stoped engine cut out? i have already asked jez and he reckons its going to be an ignition problem plugs leads but this is all new with an electronic ignition? and also dizzy could be out of place. just want to get some of your ideas on what i can do to sort these problems hoping to take it out for the day tomoz and dont no if i can trust it. thanks tom

IIRC you should be getting 13-14v when the engine is running?

Yes, anything below 13v suggests a problem with the alternator.

If it is the alternator, minispares are usualy pretty good about replacing them

generally if the alternator is duff i would have expected to see the reading going down with the lights and heater etc on (with the engine running that is obviosuly) but it was holding at 12.5ish

it was still aorund the same figure without any electrics switched on, and at any revs too.

my reason for saying the "spluttering" is conected to the ignition system somewhere is that i have had brand new plugs (ngk and champion) fail after just a few miles in the past.

add to this the fact that today we did notice that the distributer was loose and the timing had probably slipped, this could also be the cause of any rough running or power loss.

we can check the alternator again next week if you want dude, but your timing will be sorted on the rolling road next week anyway.

it will all come out in the wash, dont stress lol

Are you running an electronic ignition with a ballasted system?

The leccy ones don't like the 9v that the ballast system supplies.

i cant recall off the top of my head if his car is a ballasted system or not, i can remember checking before i put the dizzy in and wiring it up according to thier diagram though (there was one diagram for ballasted, and one for non ballast)

ballast is what you put in the bottom of a boat to stop it floating so high in the water. lol
