Why do you suspect that the engine on the pallet is different to the one in the rebuild, I can't see anything noticeable but might be able to once it is pointed out

Look at the two rectangular silver plates just under where the intake manifold sits on the pics of your engine, they are called tappet chest covers and are only found on 998 A+ engines, not 1275. Now look at the block behind the carbs in those engine build pics, no tappet chests. They are different blocks, one 998 the other 1275

looks like the tappet chest covers are missing in the build pictures, can't see the breather canister which is part of them

Why do you suspect that the engine on the pallet is different to the one in the rebuild,

The thing that first raised the suspicions of everyone, the chest covers.  The engine in the build photos doesn't have any behind those carbs.  It also has an A+ distributor fitted, and the block drain plug untapped.  I had imagined that someone had actually sold you an older A series 1275 unit with tappet covers, but that engine in the build is definitely a 1275 A+.  I wasn't sure if the back of some A series blocks had ribs or not, because there are some perculiar blocks out there if you don't know the exact details (my own engine for example is an A+ with dome type core plugs which according to many sources doesn't exist).  And as I said it does have an A series head and pulley fitted, but whatever it is, it definitely isn't the same engine.

Look carefully at the build pic I have arrowed, you can see the semicurcular bulge of the channel the push rod runs in which would be a gap if there were tappet chest holes but none fitted

Yeaah I see now, I was being stupid, you can't just change a block over can you, from 998 to 1275 so there must have been 2 engines painted the same ? Am I right ?

Yeah the blocks are different, you can swap them over but the machining work required to fit a 1275 head on a 998 block would make it easier to just have a whole different unit painted the same

You can swap everything onto a different block, but if you have been given those photos as proof of the engine build that is in the car you bought then it's either a massive mistake on the seller's behalf, or an intentional deception.

Yes, you have the idea. There are a few interchangeable parts from 998's to 1275 but it's easier just to source a complete 1275

Engine number would start with 12H for a 1275 and 99H for a 998 but it's not a 1275 regardless of what the engine number says, they are only rivited on so easily changed

No.  There are A series 1275s with tappet chest covers, but no A+ ones.  It's a Gold Seal (oddly with a Silver Seal head fitted), what engine number does it carry?

It could just have been painted gold and silver mind

Says its a 998, I think I better try and contact this person

You can also see that the Thermostat housing is different in the direction its pointing as well. But the conclusion it isn't the same engine has already been made. Hope you get it sorted

Defiantly a different engine
