Another n00b here. Name's Hywel, 28 from Cardiff and my heart is firmly set on getting my dream mini in the next couple of months. I'm obviously here to absorb the wealth of knowledge from long time owners and experts, and trawling the ICE subforum, I have already been schooled on a couple of mistakes I was planning on making!

I learned to drive in my brother's hand-me-down Mini just over ten years ago which he ended up abandoning as the engine was a heap. He added sports pack arches, deep set rims, a nice custom grill, replaced the back seats with a sloping shelf to house a big ol' sub and had bucket seats in further back than standard. I had to get rid in favour of something more reliable even before I passed my test, but you never get over your first love, do you?

My grand plan is to get a late 90's MPI Cooper and have it converted to LPG. I may start a thread about this now actually as I wonder if anyone has bothered doing it before.

See you on the boards.

Hi Hywel and welcome.

LPG conversions are really quite rare, because classic mini's tend to be relatively low mileage cars, therefore you're unlikely to get the cost of the conversion back in fuel savings for a very long time.

The other issue is that the classic mini is a small engined and light weight car, so whilst fuel consumption is somewhat lower than modern cars, it's not excessively high in the first place. Mpi Models also tend to be the most economical of all, so it makes even less sense to convert one of those across to LPG. LPG conversions are much more common in bigger fuel inefficient classics, such as Landies & VW campers.

Good luck in finding yourself a mini though, there's plenty of advice available, here so don't be afraid to ask.

Cheers. I think I'm going to give it a few months after purchase anyway and see how many miles I'm doing and how much I'm spending. It will more than likely be less than my Astra even though that is running LPG. It's a thirsty bugger. I'll want to sort myself some ICE as a priority anyway!
