I don't understand the question. You looked around and found some people have already shortened it, but your asking if it can be done?
Any chance you mean a quick shift?

Well then yes it can be done easily, just cut the stick to whatever length you fancy, re tap the thread and put the knob back on.

Yes you can cut them down, but have a feel first as it does change the throw quite a bit... might be best to fit a quick shift and shorten that, so the feel doesnt change so much...

Actually, if you fit a quick shift and then shorten it, the change in feel will be more extreme, not less, and it is very likely to require too much force to be comfortable to operate. But it may be trial and error to find what is best, as everyone has their own ideas of what is required.
The only problem about cutting down the gear lever is that it is tapered, so reducing the end to the correct diameter to cut a new thread is a real pain. You would ideally put it in a lathe, but the lever is bent, usually at least. I don't know if a tool to do it properly exists, if so it might be a sort of outside-in reamer, a tube with cutting blades on the inside, or something like a die but with plain cutting edges instead of threads. You would use it to skim down the diameter so it was parallel and of the correct diameter and then thread it with a die in the usual way. If someone knows of such a tool, please enlighten us.
Many people cut and weld them, probably to avoid the problem of making a parallel section which can be threaded.

Do you mean cars with the selector housing moved to the inside of the cabin?
As said above, if you cut down the stick the throw will be shorter anyway and a short shift kit along with a shorter stick would be a handful. The problem with simply cutting down the stick and leaving the housing under the car is the stick will be very hard to reach from the driver's seat.

It wasn't just a centre console & gaiter over a standard stick?
I reckon the easiest way would be to make up a guide bush so you could cut a section out, drill the ends concentrically through the bush, and dowel them back together.

I have a modified gear lever in the garage, when I bought a remote box the guy had taken about 3 inches off the top then glued a modifed gear knob on top. I have never used it so cant comment on what is like to use
