Hi all,

have searched the tech section but can't fine my answer.

I have noticed that my rear wheels toe in, (front of wheel points into the body), which I understand is correct as it is a safer setting for driving. What I would like to know is...

If I put a straight edge along the wheel at hub height,  where should the straight edge hit the bodywork??

many thanks,

Graham

Too many tolerances to give an "ideal" measurement. Sub frame alignment/fitment to bodywork, radius arm fitment and wheel bearing etc etc.

I am sure if everybody gave you a reading you could form some consensus of opinion but even then it would be an average.

Sounds to me like you need to get it laser tracked that will give you all the measurements you are after ( not the one you have asked for ) to check if anything is out of tolerance.

I just noticed the toe in.  I does look the same both sides which leads me to think that one particular side has not had a bump on the radius arm and bent it.  Just like to know what is normal or average in this respect.

You can't measure or assess the toe (especially at the rear) just by looking at the body side unless you take into account that the body isn't straight to begin with.  The car is narrower at the back so the body sides themselves effectively toe out.  Simply comparing the wheel to the body line will make even a parallel wheel look like it toes in.  As above you will need to measure it properly to get a good idea of what is going on.

Sounds far more complicated than I thought.

Just an update for the question to see if it helps any explanation.

I have had the covers off for a mixed result painting session and took a couple of pics for you...

They look the same each side and the wood was tested straight against the house wall.  Just still wondering if this looks ok.  Looking along the wood,  and guestimating about the front tyre position I expect the rears to point along the wood to the inside wall of the front tyre,  maybe the middle.

How does that sound / look???

Thought it looked a little extreme.  If I reduce the toe with shims will it affect anything,  (I know too little toe in can cause over steer), just thinking about tyre wear???

Many thanks as usual !!  lol

why not leave as is dont look to bad, see how it handles

should be fine for road use, obviously will need one or two mm toe in for race

rather than about the 4 or 5 standard

mines standard and seems ok for road

It seems as though the consensus is it is normal and so will leave it as is.

Still no wiser how to see how much I have,  1mm,  2mm,  5mm etc,  just like to find out if you know how to measure it ??

Agreed,  but how does the setting I and many like me have with tyre wear??   Is it worth reducing the toe in setting with shims to ease up on the scrubbing of the rear tyres ??

Toe out causes over steer.........

Toe out would be too little toe in.

I suppose if you've got a dumpy level or a theodolite or were patient with string lines and plumb bobs you could do it at home on a level flat surface, but I don't fancy your chances much on a mix of gravel and set stones with an old scaffold plank.
