Hi everyone,

I'm trying to remove my roof decal or two years. I've referred to several threads on here which recommended using a hairdryer. Well that works, but its awfully slow.. I spent an hour and I'm not even a quarter done...! The decal keeps splitting as I peel it back.

Is there a faster/easier way to do this? Appreciate any advice on this, tks.

If they came off easily they wouldn't be much good.

A more powerful heat gun will get them off faster but if you're not careful you'll also take the paint off.

It's best to just take your time.

Park it in the sun and do it on a hot day

Well, i think I've heard of these kettles with specialized spouts that can be used to peel off the decal :D

Anyway thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. A hot sunny day + hair dryer and a bikini should do the trick.

Try some WD40 as well as heat.

I just boiled the kettle let it cool down a bit then just poored it over my decals, hardly left any sticky behind :D

Try some WD40 as well as heat.

I did think about using white solvent but decided that it wouldn't help as it won't penetrate the vinyl decal. am i wrong?

just stick at it if you start messing with really hot heat guns you could mess your paint up, its painfully slow but just keep going :-)

As you ease the vinyl off, a squirt of WD40 under the vinyl will penetrate the adhesive and make I a bit less stick on the paint. It's still a slow messy process!

got it, tks. now for the replacement decal... do u guys apply clear coat on it to preserve the decal? More for the colour rather than peeling - the one I'm removing wasn't peeling but was discolouring badly due to weather and washing

Just use a quality vinyl and it should last. No to clear coat but once its been on a week a light polish and a wax will protect it.

I can't remember where but I saw a video of a guy removing decals. (This was on Petrol's MPi restoration thread, not a video after all) It was mentioned that heating from underneath was the best way as it doesn't weaken the vinyl as much but does heat up the adhesive.

+1 for WD40 removing sticker residue also, I tried using nail polish remover once, and it worked well but ended up taking the shine off paint. WD40 was just as successful if not more and it's not dangerous to paint (to my knowledge)

Cheers, Jack
