You really need to make a distinction between asking prices and actual selling prices. Unfortunately the market is filled with deluded mini owners who've spent a bit of cash on their 80's 998 and now think it's worth £3.5k. The reality is that with the exception of early, very late and particularly rare examples, very few classic mini's are actually selling for over the £2.5k mark right now.
If you're using Ebay as a guide and want a true reflection of selling prices, then stop looking at the classified's and do a search of completed listings instead. You'll generally see that those cars that have actually sold will be under the £2k mark and generally it's the near mint 1275's that will go for nearer the £2.5k mark. A nice 80's/90's 998 with full MOT, will probably reach around the £1,800 - £2,000 at the most. If it's low mileage and original spec then maybe around the £2.2k mark.
Now I appreciate that's probably not the news you want to here, but I'm afraid that it really is a reality. It's a buyers market at the moment and therefore really not a good time to sell. If you really want to maximise resale value though, then return it to as close as original spec as possible and sell all the aftermarket parts on separately. People tend to want to make a classic mini their own, so the most popular cars are always those that are a blank canvas and that haven't been modified.
