Hi there,

Been reading on this and cant find my answer, can you anyone help please ?

I have a 998 mini and I can hear a rattle coming from - what I think is the timing chain !

But I have a pre tensiorer chain fitted, can this still make that rattling noise ?

If it does make the same noise, what do I do to sort it out please ?

I cant use this - http://www.minispare...=0&tc=1#submenu

so what can I use please ?

Thanks

There should be no chain noise with the tensioner fitted, unless the chain is stretched and the tensioner pad worn. How long has it been since the chain and pad assy were replaced, wife had a 998cc with 50+k miles and it ran like clockwork with no rattle.

Is there any other way of getting rid of the noise ? Can't I just fit a new unit and get rid of the rattle ?

It only just started making this noise, never did it before.

I'm right in the middle of replacing mine. It was rattling since I got the car a month ago. Changed the alternator which got rid of half the noise. But yesterday started getting a weird juddering. Doing 30 in 3rd gear felt and sounded like driving along the rumble strips on the motorway, So I assume the cam timing was going out slightly.

So far it's only taken me an hour to strip things down. but I've still got to actually change the timing gear. Hopefully it isn't too much trouble!!

Yeah just fit a new chain, it'll be quite for a few thousand miles. If you want it to last as long as it has done, you'd need to replace the sprockets as well.........

Ok thanks, I'll order the bits I need over the weekend.

Do you have any more words of wisdom for me please ?

Yeah, don't stick your finger in a moving plastic fan blade. It hurts.

Personally I wouldn't bother converting to the A+ set up, just fit a new chain and sprockets. Chances are that before the new ones are as noisy, you'll have took out and rebuilt rebuilt & modified to a higher state of tune. Whiich would mean taking it out and doing it properly or you'll just fit a 1275. In both cases you can fit new/uprated timing gear on the bench, doing it in the car is just gonna cause you problems........

Yeah, thats what I was thinking myself.

Been looking on ebay and seen these - are the any good to use or not.

Thanks
