Hi all,

I am as you may know rollering rustoleum on the mini,  first coat went on fine,  second ok but I have had a couple of issues.

I am using a new pot of paint from Avenue coatings,  new rollers,  new tray and sponge brushes.  I have thoroughly panel wiped down the body and tack clothed.

I did notice in the tray a bit of 'split' paint,  as if it wasn't holding together or mixing with the thinners properly,  but had no problems before with the paint/thinner combination.

As the bonnet shows,  it is as if there is something on the roller,  or maybe in the tray, (left over release agent from manufacture) ??  Maybe the glue in the roller itself is to blame when applying a little pressure,  am at a loss.  Very annoyed though as the first coat went on fine with less panel wiping than this coat.

Could wet sand residue cause this??  Any ideas are appreciated in cause and how to treat the areas??

many thanks, again,

Graham

I have looked exhaustively on u tube about rollering rustoleum,  and the reaction I am having is over rustoleum 1st coat so not a paint reaction.  Looking for some common reaction sources like having to rince rollers in white spirit first before using or washing everything in washing up liquid before use due to contaminates.

thanks tho,

Graham

Usually a reaction or a swell with paint is down to a few things, lack of adhesion, incorrect prep or old paint or thinners based paint etc celly that when the new paint is applied to the old paint the thinners in the new paint will start to reverse and release the thinners in the old celly

It was a bare metal reprint. No celly on at all, just rust oleum. The crinckling came up immediately on application of paint, but only on very isolated areas. The paint is thinned with thinners, but the previous coat was the same and no problems. The stripes of reaction do lead me to think of a roller or tray problem, have cleaned well for next coat.

The reaction has dried quite hard so will wet and dry smooth and re coat to see if there is any further reaction on the same places.

Just an update.

Gave the reacted areas a 400grit rub down and to metal in a couple of spots.  Gave me this

Cleaned the areas and panel wiped then.  Washed the rollers, foam brushes and trays in panel wipe and went for it.  Reaction sorted,  must have been a bit of crud left on either the tray or roller from manufacture. Will need more rubbing down yet to blend the areas in but looking better.
