I can't figure out why I don't have first, I'm able to get into second, third, fourth and reverse. If I force it, it will grinds but doesn't engauge I can't see it hitting anywhere stopping it from getting in gear. I rebuilt the motor but it was working fine before then.

Have you got a low biting point? I had the same problem with my last mini. It turned out to be partly down to that.

Also does it go into 1st if you change down from 2nd? Could be to do with the way the primary gear (I think) spins. I can't remember the technicalities...

Try going half way into 2nd and then back into 1st.

Hope that helps!

Getting back to basics.... age of car, type of gearbox...

If it's a 3 synchro, and you're moving, yes it's going to crunch and grind. Should only select first gear when stationary.

If you're stationary and it's still crunching/grinding then it's likely to be a maladjusted clutch or poor hydraulics.

Does it crunch into reverse, when you're stationary...

Finally with all that done, and it's still causing problems, I'm afraid it's engine out time as your first gear is fubar.

New clutch and new slave, new clutch master cylinder new lines, It's a pre-verto clutch. , the clutch has been rechecked and setup was fine. There is no crunching in any other gears. First gear worked before rebuilding the engine and I never touched the gear box since it was working before.
