Anyone know what the orange and red lights indicate on the dash clock when starting the ignition?

I noticed the orange light doesnt come on when I turn my key - (Ive just fitted a new set of three dash clocks, plus three additionals, voltmeter, water/oil dual, and a time clock). Cant say whether this has always ben the case or not, ive never noticed to be honest! My wifes mini has an orange and red light that both come on when the key is turned?

Wondering if it has anything to do with my starting issues? Had to jump the engine using my battery charger (I know..) to get her going. After a fairly long tick over, about an hour, I thought nothing of switching the engine off again. 10 mins later She wont even turn over, even though all the electrics appear to be working (except the orange light!) New time clock is reading the correct time, all the illuminations work as they should, and the new voltmeter is showing just over 11v.

Wondering if theres a fuse for the starter or something that I might have blown whilst fannying about!?

Still fairly new to the mini, but starting to find my way around....

is it a centre speedo you have? if so it may not have the orange light. The orange light is the oil pressure warning. If it ever comes on when your driving stop immediatly!!! Even then it could be that your engine will get some damage due to the low pressure it takes to operate the switch. The red light is ignition and indicates the battery is getting charged. if your alternator is not working correctly it will come on and soon after the car will stop!

The voltage your getting is too low it should be around 13 V If the red light stays on when the car is on it suggests a problem with the alternator. Make sure its plugged in before anything else

If the light is off when driving is sounds as if youve got a pretty serious drain on the battery or that the battery is worn out.

Id say your battery is shot. Even if you left it running for 10 hours, if its knackered it wont hold a charge...... If its not the battery then it it will probably be the alternator.

Thanks guys. Defo not the alternator, this was upgrade to a 70A just a few months ago. I will change the battery, see if that helps!

firstly I'd check your wiring.

You say its a new dash, its possible the wires got mixed up and the orange and red lights are wired wrong

You say you have 11v when running that indicates the charging system isn't working right.

If the batterys got enough juice power lights the alternator should be able supply the correct voltage, the battery just won't store it.

you can run a small check on the dash lights.

turn ignition on and unplug the 3 pin plug from the alternator..does the red light go out.
