Anyone know why the front parcel shelf changed from the more solid panel on Mk1/2's to the later style with large cut-outs?

Was it for weight saving?  Or perhaps safety?

Just curious...

Cheers,

Tom

Simply, the earlier ones has more metal in them and hey would have been a pain in the ass to fit! They are not perticularly load bearing so thy don't have to be strong!

The actual reason is that crash testing was just becoming compulsory, and the Mini failed because the shelf was too stiff and inflicted massive injuries on the test dummy, so they weakened it to allow it to collapse progressively when hit by the front passenger. Remember that seat belts were not compulsory then, and fitted to very few cars.
