hi all, i have a 93 cooper.

i have just converted from spi to carb. got rid of injection unit, ecu, the lot. installed electronic ignition,hiff44,and rewired the loom as per the wiring diagram for carb'd minis in the haynes book.

but having done all this when i turn the key all that happens is the relay clicks but nothing else. the car started fine before (4 days ago) so battery should be fine.

any thoughts?? many thanks guys

On a 93 car you should have a pre-engaged starter, so check the cable from the battery onto the solenoid and it should give a reading of 12.5v+ now locate the small terninal on the solenoid which is a feed from the ignition switch and when you get someone to hold the key in the start position it should also read approx 12.5v+ assuming the battery is indeed fully charged. the thinner large cable on the starter solenoid to the back of the starter motor should have the same voltage when the key is held in the stat position.

Check out those connections and voltages and see what results you get.

right yep checked the voltages. the bigger connection to the rear on the solenoid has no voltage at all - this must be the prob. so ive check at the starter relay and the white/red ignition feed is coming in live but nothing is coming out the relay. the relay just clicks.

Is there power going into the starter relay, you say the white/red goes live but nothing comes out..

Could just be a dodgy relay.

Without looking at the wiring diagram is there a brown going into the relay...if so is it live, it should be

right ive taken the red/white straight from the igntion switch to the solenoid and it turns over. took the relay off and it turns over but is this safe?

early models didn't have the relay, but its a 2 minute job sort a relay out.

Brown wire constant live

white/red from ignition

black earth

and I forget the other colour think its brown/red goes live when relay energises(clicks)

Not so simple. There is from memory a  wire from the relay box that needs to be grounded when you turn the key on. This was handled by the ECU inhibitor. Looks like it was blue for the manual cars and green and yellow for autos, if not the starter solenoid won't operate. If you just remove the ECU and leave the relay box then the starter relay won't energise.

HT leads on in correct order.

4 - 3 - 2 - 1   plugs

3 - 1  dizzy

4 - 2

timing probably wants sorting

The solenoid on the pre-engaged starter draws a lot more current than the separate solenoid and more then the ignition switch is designed to handle.  So earlier models don't need a relay, but late models do have them.
