My Mini (74 998, HS4 carb) was running rough and overheating so I changed the headgasket. It was burned through between cylinders 1 and 2.

I got it back together last night and adjusted the valves. When I tried to start it it backfires through the carb at idle. I didn't change any settings to the timing or carb while the head was off.

It seems to smooth out a bit when revving but at idle or when letting off the throttle or pressing the throttle it will backfire through the carb. I turned the distributer a bit to see if it made a difference and it smoothed out a bit but still backfires.

Any ideas on where to go from here?

could be an air leak on the manifold.

Or maybe even ht leads on wrong

Adjust tappet clearance again, check for airleaks at the manifolds, then re-set mixture to 3.0% CO at idle

HT leads are on correct. I loosened the valves up a bit thinking maybe the intake valves weren't closing all the way. That didn't help any. I tightened down the manifold a bit more. It seemed like there was a bit of seepage of something on the gasket around the intake runners. I sprayed carb cleaner all around them while it was running and it didn't change anything.

As said before reset tappets.

I found the problem. Somehow in my hurry to get it put together I thought the ignition rotor turned clockwise and never thought I could be wrong. I put the wires in the correct order and it runs great now!
