Hope someone out there can help.Have a 1980 mini.Wanted little more power and managed to locate an SPi engine. All installed but cannot turn over the engine via the key. There is a click of the solenoid at the starter but will not turn over.Tried another starter from my 1990 Cooper but still does the same.Does the SPi need a beefier wire from the ignition? Have tried the old solenoid mounted on the wing to provide a 'switch' but still just clicks. Good battery supply and the engine has good earth. Am I missing something? Please help

Did it turn over before you fitted it?

This was my initial though too - too long a bolt jams the flywheel.

Sort of, but that's not what's causing the problem.  The pre-engaged solenoid draws more current than the remote one so the ignition switch will be overloaded in the start position and eventually fail.  This is why later cars have starter relays, but it's not what is causing your engine not to turn.  It is something you need to fix though.
