Are both bearings shot? You can take the shaft out from the back and then get the nut off. I had that bearing failure about the same driving distance.. I think it is a lack of oil saturation.

No space for more bearings, buy top quality BB and do a oil capacity mod. So much better for me it has been and I am about +4k miles now.

Now then.

Managed to get the diff stripped, found this when I took the nut and pinion shaft out.

B4-DD0805-70-F0-42-F1-B18-A-DAF9-B3604-C

needless to say the it looked like a unicorn had taken a dump in the bottom casing with the amount glitter and shiny bits in there!!!

thoroughly inspected the diff, crown and pinion gears and and surprisingly no damage what so ever!!!!! surprising because ball bearings are not known for their soft squidgy nature.

the play in the output shaft is due to worn cover plate bush.

gonna replace, input/output shaft bearings and seals as well as both cover bushes and seals and do the breather mod.

one question about the breather mod, did you just drill and tap it the whole way through the casing or just drill and tap the same depth as the airline fitting then open up the hole under it?  on mine it only looks like a bout a 4/5mm hole in the internal side of the casing.

I went all the way through and tapped it. The pressure is less so it doesn't spit out the top nearly as much and since I run more oil, bearings are doing well. You might as well do the drain plug oil capacity mod while you are at it... makes changing / adding oil so much easier.
