Think I'd be fitting the damper and then standing in the boot and bouncing up and down to see how it settles.

Pretty sure the dampers aren't at full extension when the car is at rest though.

How tight is the radius arm when it pivots, if overtightened or the pivot shaft is a bit tight it may not be pivoting up freely.

Have you ever fitted a rear susension?  >_<

Yes.

I've got a car sat on the back wheels now with the dampers off and all the junk inside it, new cones too, but it's not doing an impression of a leaping gazelle, should it be?

Are you try to tell me that in an almost normally loaded car will control the ride height using the dampers...? Speed bumps and humped back bridges might be a bit crashy.

Defer to you on this since you know best.

1 - if you jack up the back of the mini, the damer will keep the stuff all together

2 - that is not the case because if you look at the pic, which you clearly didnt, the wheel is on the ground the the damer is sitting on the wheel arch keeping the back raised

Oddly, I clearly did, perhaps you clearly didn't read what I wrote.

Are you telling me that the damper will control ride hide in normal use? To be clear, that with the car normally loaded, the damper will be in tension, stopping the wheel dropping? I should have been clearer with the term "checkstrap", but I think you well understand what I meant.

To the OP trying fitting the shock absorber top mount then report back please. Also though do check the knuckle before doing so.

And if the top of the shock absorber is fouling the arch like mentioned then this can be the issue. For the car to sit that high there must be something amiss.

LOL if you dont fit the damper how come you check the ride height?

I have to admit that I did assume that this photo was taken before the damper was fitted and that you were actually worried about the height after fitting it.  As above if you don't have the top of the damper fitted and it is sitting as shown in the photo then it can jam up and that will hold the car up.  As the damper is not being loaded centrally when it's wedged in at an angle like that it can lock up.  Lift the car back up, extend the dampers and install the tops of them.

Let's see what happens when the OP bolts the damper up. I'd say something is wrong if the damper is fully extended and controlling the ride height when the wheel is on the ground and the car is normally ballasted.

Hi,

This is how the car looks like when I fitted the Mini Sport Moulton/Avon FAM3968 rubber cones with the rear wheels on the ground.

The car is so high that I even cannot tight the shock absorber retaining locknut.

I believe that the rubber cones length (93mm) is the problem.

I even took a picture of the knuckle joint without the gaiter so you can see that the knuckle joint is well seated on the nylon cup.

Is the bottom damper stud/bolt on the radius arm hitting the subframe?

Is the knuckle a mini one? Are others longer, i.e from allegros etc?

Think mine were similar, but not quite as high. Bought hilos in the end and increased height as they settled.

C'mn cones are fine, if youre sure that the knuckles are seated and you dont have hilos, just put an axle stand under the subfame for obvious safety reasons, place a jack underneath and raise the arm up so you can lock the damper.

Even though the top of the absorber is not fouling the car what about the large metal washer. Is that fouling the reinforcement on the tower?
