I have a 1974 mini 1000. I just had to take my head into the machine shop to have it machined. Before I took it in, I was inspecting it for cracks and such and noticed that the thermostat bypass is plugged. Not just filled with crap, plugged. It looks like someone drove a freeze plug into it.

Is there any reasons for this? I can't think of any.

Should I remove the plug or just leave it in.

It was running fine before, but I blew a head gasket. Could the plug have something to do with this? Sorry, I'm pretty new to the mini scene, but I'm loving every minute of it!

The bypass hose was purely to allow some water flow until the thermostat opened some blank it and run holes in the rim of the thermostat, If the plug is well fitted  then continue to run it, have you got the later 1275 water pump with the undrilled hole in the bypass outlet?

No the water pump has the hole for it. There was even a hose on it.

The hose is a 2" piece that is going from the water pump to the head

So in effect you have the bypass hose coming off the water pump for the sake of having one as the bypass inlet hole in the head has been blocked. So you have all the disadvantages of a bypass hose for no reason

If it was mine I would run the the later pump which is not drilled and do away with the hose

^^This, and it wouldn't hurt to check that the plug is a proper screw in plug, not just something contrived.
