Put my lights on yesterday for the first time in a month and everything seemed to close down

Revs dropped, lights dimmed, oil gauge light came on and the gauge itself dropped to less then 20 and the voltage dropped to 8??

Had to keep revving it to get home - once the lights were off all went back to normal.....

Guess its an issue with the earth strap?

Sounds like a short to earth somewhere in the lighting circuit to me. I'd follow the lighting wires around with the aid of a wiring diagram and look for anything corroded or damaged. Does it vary if you are on dipped or main beam?

Starts ok - no difference if the lights are dipped or no......

Only has a problem when you put the lights on

Extra load on the alternator so potentially your problem could be there. However it still pays to check all of the connections to see if something is amiss.

Test the alternator by checking the vltage across the battery - fiirst with nothing on, I mean switched on. It should give about 14 volts with a few revs above idle. Then test by switching things on one at a time. It should still reach 13-14 volts.
