The switch works on the remote housing where the gear stick is, there is a wire in and out which is 12v back to the mk4 lights, what gear change do you have ? the rod type has the switch but the earlier alloy remote not sure they had one and the switch may well have been a manual on/off switch.

Im not sure what the difference between the remote and rod change is. J have 2 rods that link to the gearbox. I suppose this is the rod change then. I am going to replace the alluminium housekng at the bottom of the gear lever as well as the gear lever is all over the place and you dont even have to lift for reverse. Can you ground that cable along with the others at the bottom of the fuel tank strap?

Then on the rod change the switch is in the side of the allow housing where the geal lever fits, its a switched 12v feed back to the lights and the rear reverse lights earth on the mounting bolts as you describe with the others
