I recently got a quote from an auto electrician to sort an on-going problem I have with my 98 MPI. A 13 way connector that connects the engine bay loom to the behind dash loom had a scorched wire in it. Tell tale sign was a brown scorch mark on the yellow guard inside the connector. it is located behind the air filter on the right hand side of the throttle body. The engine loom connector end is fastened to a bulkhead plate. It was the feed to the fuel pump. Its weird when you follow the diagram, in and out of looms through the relay box, but I finally sussed the culprit. Even bought a new fuel pump as 12v was getting to the boot but not enough oomph to run the pump. Anyhow explained on the phone to get a quote from an auto electrician, he quoted £ 350 to change the connector. He lives only 50 minutes away.
The connectors (Amp or J) are available on line. I purchased one the female version 13 way. Less than a fiver with all the blades and seals. The individual connectors are held in place with a small plastic lock that is part of the connector block. With a small spike (I used a small pair of tweezers) you can hold the lock up and pull each wire out in turn. 45 mins later new block fitted, faulty connector cleaned and squashed to grip the male part (ooh matron). Everything works great and I saved a fortune. Auto electrician was going to cut the connector block out completely soldering up the wires and use heat shrink sleeves. Not telling you his name but he lives in Rhyl. It was a right fiddle to do but when all done was very satisfying.
So before you change the pump or the relay box, as I suspected these at first, try this connector. It is a very fat brown wire amongst all the others. Beware there are two identical white/red leads so do one at a time.
