I have recently put in centre binnacle and a new speedo cable in the car

the speedo cable spins round while out of the speedo when the car is moving

the speedo moves round when I put the matchstick in the back

but together they don't work, everything lights up etc... the needle stays on 0mph all the time when the cable is in

do I need a new speedo?

If your sure the cable is located and the cable drove your old speedo then its suspect, if you have the cable connect it to the speedo and run it up with a variable speed drill, then you'll know for sure

sorry to confuse, I had a three clock speedo that was in front of the steering wheel, I recently changed it to a centre binnacle so you have to change the cable so its not the cable, can the inside of the speedo where the cable goes be worn?

It could be worn so use the cable your using on the car connect it up and rotate the other end off a drill and check for correct operation, just as a noe the older speedo inners used to be a square some now are oval and drive in 2 contact areas and not 4 of the square end.
