Hi All,

Do coils either work or not (as simple as that)?

I ask because my coil works, so is there any reason to buy a new one? I'm thinking of putting my mini on a rolling road and want all the easily replaceable bits to be working as well as possible beforehand.

It's a less common coil too because my mini has the 64DM4 distributor and resistive spark plugs.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

If the coils working then its ok and the 64DM4does use a special coil which is a GCL143, are the plugs and leads all ok ?

Leads all seem to make a good seal and don't look to have perished at all.  I've got some brand new plugs ready to go on as soon before the rolling road session as possible.

Thanks for your help!

What I ment sorry was have you tested the leads with a multimeter they do age and cause misfires when older.

What sort of resistance should you be looking for in a ht lead? Or does the voltage involved in the ht cct exacerbate any slight fault in the lead which a multi meter wouldn't necessarily detect?

I did a short write up here on testing ignition leads http://www.theminifo...ark-plug-leads/

You need to test them with a Megger, a multimeter won't tell you very much.

No one here nowdays has a Megger, and the multimeter will be able to test the ohms of the lead as per my write up in the link above. Were struggling to get members to buy a Multimeter 90% have never seen or heard of a Megger ;D

But I have resistive plugs so I think I have non resistive leads which should have almost no resistance?  Will these still be affected as much?

All modern leads will be a resistive lead test yours and compare the readings to my write up, or if in doubt you can get a new set for £12ish

I agree, but leads, particularly carbon leads will show completely different characteristics under high tension - a Megger gets just a bit closer than a multimeter - It's not only the core you need to look at but terminations and insulation.

You can gauge a lot by opening the bonnet on a damp night...

Ether that...or you could climb a 32kV pole .... :-)
