Has anyone tried a belt drive, like what's used on Harleys instead of the chain?  It would sure be a lot quieter.

I briefly looked into it but was finding it difficult to get information, I guess you are better placed in the US to get info and help on the subject, I am very interested to find out the outcome for my sprint car design, so please relay any info if you get any..

Might be worth talking to Brian at Transdev (I can't remember his surname unfortunately). They can do belt drive systems for almost any power rating. We have used them on our electric race cars and they are superb. Two pulleys and a belt will set you back about £120-£150 depending on sizes. We have run them on one of our cars for the last five years and they have done about 2000 race miles without problem on the original belt. They can also do machining in house on the pulleys to fit whatever you need for very little money.
