Hi all.

So im going to see a man about a mini on Sunday and I've been sent a few pictures of it. One of them caught my eye:

Im not sure if this is the seam cover or the seam itself. If it is the seam, then is there much work involved in replacing/fixing them? Would it be wise to steer clear of this mini of it is the seams that are rusted?

The reason for my questions is that a few people have recommended for me to look for another if the seams are shot, so I thought id ask you lovely people as I have no idea what im talking about :ermm:.

Any and all help appreciated!

Thanks!

It's difficult to tell if that is the seam cover strip or whether that is the actual seam itself.

Either way without looking at the car properly it's no way to determine whether or not it's worth considering. You could find it's just superficial rust anyway.

I would go and take a look at it. It looks to have been stored for a while so it's probably going to take some work to get back on the road regardless. Are you looking for a project?

Apparently it has been dry stored for 13 years.

Im looking for one that I can get roadworthy within a couple of months, but work on afterwards. A working project so to speak :-).

I know that this one needs the flitches and sills sorting out too, but the guy who is selling it is throwing in the replacements with the car, so my only real worry is the seams.

Try not to worry about them too much, it just looks like surface rust to me.

I would go and take a proper look at the sills, inner wings, scuttle, floor pan, heel board and boot floor.

Take a load of pictures and post them up here :-).

Looks to me as if it's been de-seamed and not finished. If that's ths case I'd be a bit wary.

If I see any signs of de-seaming being attempted, ill walk away from it. I've heard that its a lot of work, time and money to get it sorted.

But I suppose ill only know exactly what's wrong when I see it tomorrow, which cant come soon enough! ^_^

If there are no seam covers on there then it looks like surface rust then as long as its not deeply pitted and just surface you should be ok.

If the outer sills are crusty there a good chance the inners will have issues which can be a lot of work but once done then if treated you should not have to worry about them again.

If the flitches need doing then the A panels will more than likely need to be done and then that could lead onto the A posts. Also if the upper section of the flitch is crusty certainly around the fresh air vent this can then go under the the scuttle close out. More work.

Have a good poke around like mentioned and walk away if you feel it's too much work. If there is filler showing on the scuttle or any bubbles on it then it gets to be even more work.
