The Best Offset For 12" Alloy Wheels?

Best Answer MINI MAD RKH , 13 August 2013 - 01:21 PM

Hi Dan,

As close as possible to the right place to make the steering work properly would be much appreciated. I take it an offset of 10 for instance would have a negative impact on steerign and overall driveability over the standard offset of 34?

if that is the case why do they offer a different offset?

Cheers.

5'' = ET41

5.5'' = ET47

you could have lower offset to get a bit more poke & I don't think it will affect the handling too much if you don't go mad - ET35 & 40 respectively should be fine   :D

Hi all,

Currently i have a standard MPI cooper classic with original 12" rims and i would like to move to 12" either 5x12 or 5.5x 12" rims on 165/65/12 tyres.

The issue i have found is that there are loads of aftermarket wheels around but the offsets are different to the 34offset orginal wheels. e.g +4, 10, 22

I want to fill the standard arches with wheel and tyre so which would be the best offset for 5 inch and the same for 5.5 in order to achieve this?

Many thanks,

  You are asking two different questions here.  The best offset is the one that puts the centreline of the wheel in, as close as possible, the right place to make the steering work properly.  The offset that fills the arches will probably be different and will depend on what arches are fitted too.  So which is more important to you?  A car that drives properly or one that looks the way you want?

  Changing the offset affects the wheel centre, but so does changing the camber castor, ride height, etc.  This and personal preference (some people like the dished look, some don't) is why there are different offsets.  If you aren't making any other changes then try to keep the centre of the wheel in the same position it was on the hub.  To do this make sure the extra width is added equally about the centre of the hub, half the extra width should be added to the offset (as close as possible).  I am by no means experienced enough in suspension setup to give you an in depth explanation, but if you want to look into it further and work out what you want you should research scrub radius, castor, camber and king pin inclination.  It's easy to fit something because it looks nice and run the way the car drives as a result.
