Hello all, well i've gone and bought myself one of the last of the minis.  Not quite an LE500 but an x reg cooper sport.  Always wanted a cooper with a sportspack but couldnt justify spending what they are priced at.  So when i saw this on ebay, newly listed and only an hour away from me for £1500 i instantly pressed buy it now.  Ok it may be in pieces and i only had photos to go off but i was willing to take the chance.  Apart from the  rotten scuttle and stripped front it didnt look too bad, and floors and sills are solid, well so it says but we will see.  It also came with all old MOTs and tax discs from 2003.  Although it hadnt seen the road since 2010.  Also came with some new panels and a fully reconditioned gearbox with receipt.  Anyway popped over to pay for it last night and picked up half of it. For now this is my mini so far, the car will be delivered tomorrow so more pics to follow :)

Van full of bits

The original front end still with headlamp buckets and foglight brackets attached

Bonnet looked sound until i put my thumb through it

Then i turned it over

Boot lid also looked ok as thought id repair this

178_zps06c26df7.jpg

But then noticed this too and its not hidden behind the no plate so will replace

Recon gearbox

Part stripped engine

Both doors will also need new skins but overall are solid :)

Will upload more pics tomorrow once the car arrives and i have a closer look at what it needs.

Let the fun begin .......

My plans are to to keep it as an original cooper sport.  Other than a change in colour to tahiti blue, and a wavy grille, maybe a few chrome bits, everything else will be as it should be.

Good luck with the rebuild. I am doing a 98 MPI Sportspack and it might be worth a mention, I have found lots of rust inside of the seams. Not easy to sort but it can be done with a bit of effort.

Look forwards to the updates

Pete

hadnt considered overiders but they finish it off well.  Was thinking of fitting clear glass indicator lenses with the chrome bezel rather than the plastic ones too, just to give it more of the classic mini look.  Thats a while off yet

Ive read through your project pete and i must say you have been extremely thorough.  Mine will probably be the same but i dont think i have the time or patience to split them and do as you have.  Good work though fella

Well the car arrived a couple of hours ago so heres some pics for you lot :) Bit worse than I originally thought but nothing too bad.  Worst area seems to be around the screen and front gutter but hopefully a genuine scuttle with screen surround should sort this.

Anyway ill let the pics do the talking .......

Ive seen worse!

Best of luck mate

Well thats the gamble you take with buy it now on ebay haha.  For a 2000 cooper sport i thought it was a reasonable price, although on closer inspection does need a little more bodywork than first thought.  Its not too bad though and have done much worse.  The fact half the old panels are still attached an have been sliced off doesnt help.  I think a full screen and scuttle heritage panel will save me hours of work and will transform the front end.  Think ill start at the front and work back

Plenty of panels needed there then. I think once those outer sills are off the inners will be crusty. Whip those front shock mounts off as well, i bet there will rust lurking there as well.

I was thinking exactly the same.  I got 2 new magnum wings, scuttle and a front panel with the car but after previous experience will get a genuine scuttle panel and a genuine bonnet as mine has had it.  i'm going to try and use genuine where i can but know the magnum wings arent too bad to fit :) as for the shock mounts i think holes behind are guaranteed :s

Those quarter panels will be hiding some nasties as well i bet. I did some work on an SPI recently where those cracks went full height on both sides. Not good.

If the inner sills are gone then hit M machine for their panels as well as the outer sills. They are as good as Heritage. Also those doorsteps as well. They have just done their own pressings for those and they are supposed to be far superior to anything other than the Heritage complete frame.
