hi everyone
i have a 1976 clubman that i am turning in to a roadgoing rally car. i ahve just bought a turbo head + all the other turbo bits,
i was wondering if i can just slap it on a standard 1275 A+. or would i need to change pistons etc?

It is possible to Turbocharge your existing engine, providing it's in good condition it should be fine. There are however a few things to consider.
Depending on the compression ratio of your engine you may need to lower it. You will need to use the Turbo carb, fuel pump, regulator, inlet & exhaust manifolds and the Turbo dizzy.
As regards your pistons, they should be able to withstand "modest" boost levels, but as i've never tried this on non Turbo pistons i couldn't say what was a safe level. I guess it's one of those try it and see areas ....

cheers for the advise
i do have all the nessasary parts to do this conversion, and a do have three 1275 A+ engines so i think i will see what the maximum boost a standard one can handle, if it blows it blows.
i will post later when i have tryed this to let you know what happens.

should be orate to run bout 7-10psi i reckon, not much more because the std turbo lump dont like running much more than that, unless someone wants to correct me.

The limiting factor for boost on a standard Metro Turbo engine is the compression ratio, this is 9.4-1. Raising the boost much, if at all above the standard 7psi will only lead to detonation.
The Turbo pistons are man enough for a lot more than standard boost, but the pistons in the normally aspirated engines have a thinner crown, so i'm unsure how much boost it would be safe to run on these ?

For a road motor i would try something like Kent 266, normally aspirated MG Metro or Avonbar Phase 2 cams.
I have run the phase 2 it is excellent !!
Phil.
