Steering Column Refit

Best Answer sonikk4 , 13 October 2013 - 07:19 PM

If there is no dowel then fit away. I would keep the two u clamps loose so that the rack is positioned correctly and there is no stress on the spline drive. Once the column is fitted then nip up the u clamps.

Question in regards to centralising rack. Do I need to and where the?!!?!?

I cant fint a cover or anything thru the hole on the passenger side to insert a dowel. If I haven't moved car, and I cant find this bit do I need to do. the pinion..? coming thru the floor that inner column clamps onto have not been removed or moved in anyway......

Am I ok to just fit inner column back on?

Cheers in advance.. sorry about the bad english!

Karl

Due to the size of the hole in the toeboard for the splined section it cannot go too far either side. The new rack i fitted to my sons project did not have anything to align it other than the hole for the splined section.

If i get a chance this week i will have a look at my 75 clubbie but i'm sure there is no dowel there either.

It's not to align the rack in the shell, it is to centralise the rack innards to its casing. Therefore you know it is in the middle when you first put the TREs on etc so you don't end up with more turns one way than the other on the steering.

However, not all steering racks have the facility, especially aftermarket replacements.

thanks GraemeC

TRE's? I haven't taken out or changed anything other than removing the outer and inner steering column. It there a chance that this all could moved when I took out columns? pinion/spindle (what the inner column clamps too still there as per photos, car has not been moved)

I'm probably over-thinking all this but just because its steering I don't want to take any chances. I have not touched the rack, just the column I was really confused as per the Haynes as per top photo

Track rod ends. Don't worry about it. I'm sure it was handy on the production line, but on the road you can just turn the steering from lock to lock and figure out the midpoint by counting the turns. If the car doesn't go in a straight line the TRE's aren't fitted equally. If it does, but the steering wheel is skewed, refit the column to the pinion spline shaft.

As mentioned above, not all racks have this feature but if it does there is a nylon plug, normally with an Allen key head. You remove the plug and insert a suitable dowel. When the dowel drops into place the rack is internally centralised.
