N/s 7.5 Disc Hub Replacement, Disc Locks Up Against Hub

Best Answer Minimad_Diver , 15 October 2013 - 10:32 PM

Just thought I would update with what actually was the problem.

It wasn't the hub or the disc!!  It was the drive flange.

Had a chat with Gavin @ Somerford Mini this afternoon and he suggested bring them the Hub, Disc, Drive Flange etc.   Knocked off work a little bit early, and an hour later Gavin was checking over all my bits.

Took him no more than 5mins to see that the drive flange was missing about 2-3mm from the end that goes against the bearings, hence the locking up when trying the old flange on the new hub.

At some point in the history of the hub etc, (I bought them over 15 years ago as reconditioned, obviously not done well) the bearing must have seized and damaged both the flange and hub, and someone cleaned it all up and sold it on.

Was completely obvious when Gavin put a ruler on my flange against a new one.

Hi,

I sure I've done something wrong but can't figure out what it is.

OK, so I have a set of Cooper S 7.5 discs and Mini fails MOT on Saturday with excessive play in the N/S wheel bearing, no problem i thought, Malvern was next day, just pick up a bearing kit and away we go.

Sunday comes, up I go to Malvern, pick up Bearing kit, come home, removed hub, got old bearings out, fitted in new ones in, fitted everything back together again and checked everything was good.

Only it wasn't, no difference at all still as much play as when I started.  OK, got thinking, had my dad juggle the wheel about to see if I could see anything moving that shouldn't, Top ball joint looked like it could have some play, so took a shim out and tightened (not properly, just enough to remove any play and I would replace properly if it sorted the problem), didn't resolve the problem.

OK, take everything apart and start again, only this time I notice that I can almost take out the inner bearling ring by hand and it can spin round while in the hub - not good.  I get the new bearing ring out, then try the old one in there, just to make sure what is going on, same thing, can spin round and almost take out by hand, so the hub is knackered.

I bought a new Hub (FAM2391) and ball joints (left work early to pick them up), fitted it all up with bearings etc, come to put the disc back on, and the disc locks up against the hub, there's no space between the hub and the back of the disc.  I don't seem to have any 'spare' parts not fitted so can't work out what it is that I've missed.

A bit of a rambling descriptions of events but should give the flow of what has happened.

So what have I done wrong, or what haven't I done?

Cheers

Neil

if you are to measure the diameter of the hubs, the old one and the new one, i reckon the new one will be slightly bigger, i have had this before with different hubs some times rust builds up and just needs removing, but you have a new hub, check that its is identical to the old one

Does the disc get caught on the steering arm?

Ok,

Answers in order.

Diameters are near enough identical, new hub is smaller diameter (has a noticeable radius change, compared to old which has a nice taper front to back) at front but both same at back.

Not getting caught on steering arm, did think that after my post, so I removed it and same thing occurs.

Looks like it getting caught on where steering arm bolts to, I'm not sure but doesn't seem to be any clearance, and doesn't seem quite right almost like it's not been machined down enough

It will be the hub when i was doing research into changing down from 8.4's i had read that although all disc hubs are technically the same (with exception of 7inch based around drum type), some are cast slightly different and don't allow a 7.5 inch disc to fit.

You should be able to search and find some info on the subject.

Contact minispares.

Later hubs are not the same as those used for 7.5" brakes and, although in most cases they'll fit with no problems, some simply dont clear the discs.

He needed a new hub as the bearing race has spun inside the hub. New hub isn't working as the disc is fowling against it.

I thought it was this....

but if its against the back of the hub, then maybe not!

@The Principal,

Was on MOT as wheel bearing but after changing the bearing found it was the hub that was the problem so its a new hub.

@jaydee, @jonny f,

That's what I was afraid of, looks like I'm heading back to Somerford tomorrow.

Now have to just dismantle everything again :-(, mind you I could probably do it in my sleep by now, seem to have done it a lot over the last 24hrs :-)
