    Starting My Mini Up

Hi,

I own a mini one, 2002 reg, 1.6 manual.

The ABS light was showing on my dash board so I took this into the garage and was told I needed new brake pads and disc.

So I got these fitted, However the light was still showing but only flashed up now and again not on all the time, Then the tyre gauge warning light started to show also. So I checked all tyres, all at the same gauge and was perfect. When this happened both lights have been on constant.

So I've taken this back into the garage where I was told I might need a new cable or a new sensor for the ABS, However they looked into this and an advised me that its not the cables as he cant see any fault with them or the  sensor. He has advise me to get a electrician to look at this as he is sure this could be a new ABS pump. But would like a second opinion on all the wiring.  They have quoted me around £1600,00 for a new pump. If this is the fault.

Please could somebody help me? Has anyone had this problem with there Mini?

Do I get an electrician to confirm this?

Also does anyone know who much the part would be if I bought this off my own back.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

The tyre pressure warning works off the ABS sensors so that would explain that light coming on. I think you need to take it somewhere where it can be connected to a fault code reader. That will narrow down where the fault lies.

Hi, this forum is dedicated to classic minis. You are more likely to get an answer on one of the dedicated new mini forums. If all else fails, don't spend £1600 on a pump, spend it on a classic mini. Good luck.

However, there are many members on this forum who have both Minis and MINIs, and they maybe able to answer your question/help.  It is possible that you might get a quicker response on totalMINI or one of the other MINI based forums, however, it is definitely worth checking back here in a couple of days.  Those on here with MINI knowledge do like to help with MINI questions if they can.  Good luck! :-)

The abs light will be on , probably due to a faulty/ dirty sensor. These are bolted into the back of the hub. They can easily be removed and cleaned as they collect alot of crud which can give a false signal.

As for the tyre light, i am not aware that this is linked to the abs. it certainly isnt on mine. You can re set the light quite easily, follow the instructions in the hand book. My tyre light comes onsometimes if i remove the wheels. Quite odd as i dont have runflats or sensors on the inside of my wheels.........

Exactly what I was going to say, easy enough to clean or replace.

Most thing run off the ABS system nowadays, speed, flat tyre light, ABS ECT.

The low tyre pressure light comes on when a wheel sensor (linked in with abs) senses a wheel turning faster due to a decrease in the diameter of the tyre due to deflation. After swapping tyres or wheels or resetting pressures the warning light system needs to be re-initialised as described in the owner handbook.

Should you ever need a replacement ABS pump they are readily available much cheaper from specialist MINI breakers such as MJR MINI-Matt or MINItechspares:

I guess you could test the pump by slamming on the brake and seeing if you can feel the pedal fighting back and pumping.

As mentioned above this is a dedicated classic Mini forum, so possibly not the best place to get your answer, but some of us are new MINI owners too.

It's been a long time since I owned an R50 model like yours so some of the info below is from memory, (have owned R55, R56, & now R60 since).

  • ABS Light - Lights up the letters ABS in the tacho - This is monitored by the ABS sensor (Wheel speed sensor).  This does not tell you that your brake pads need replacing, your garage is wrong there (worryingly!).
  • Runflat light - a flat tyre symbol with ! isnide - This is also monitored by the ABS sensor.  Essentially it measures the individual speeds of the 4 wheels and compares them to each other.  If one rotates at a different speed to the other for a set period the car assumes the rolling diameter has changed due to under/over inflation (puncture), and triggers the light.
  • Brake Wear - Cirlce with three dotted lines around it on either side - This is monitored by teh brake wear sensor, (not the ABS), and essentially triggers a light when it wears down to bare metal.

The symbols above can be seen on pages 17 & 18 of the pdf in this link http://pdf.textfiles... All Models.pdf

Take the car to a garage that knows what they're talking about, preferably an independent MINI specialist for them to have a look. I personally doubt your ABS pump has gone as as far as I can tel it has no effect on the runflat light. I'd put money on a faulty or dirty ABS Sensor on one of the wheels.  If the ASC light comes on as well then I'd suggest a steering angle sensor.

MINI specialists that would be able to help aren't exactly close (although manchester must have a BMW speicalist). Some MINI specialists;

Lohen - Stafford

Coastal Racing - Morecambe

Minisport - Padiham (Burnley)

SJR Automotive - Chester

Mad4mini - Leeds

1320Mini - Cambridgeshire

There are also a lot ofmembers who do not wish to trawl through loads of MINI related questions on what is a classic mini forum. Hence why TMF staff members direct new MINI owners towards the websites where they are more likely to gain the answers they require. This has been discussed on many occasions and the majority view has always been that we are MINI tolerant but do not have a MINI section in much the same way as we do not have a ford focus or fiat 500 section.

I have been a TMF member since 2007 and it has certainly been stated before on more than one occasion that the policy was members who can answer MINI technical questions should be allowed to do so BEFORE others who cannot help just send them away. Obviously I am not alone in thinking this...........

No matter what some say a MINI is related to the Mini and forever will be in the same way a current Fiat 500 or New Beetle are related to the classic version.......the Ford Focus is related to the Escort and Anglia so this type of arguement is irelevant....if respected long established clubs like the 'Mini Cooper Register have a MINI section in both their monthly club magazine and forum plus MINI classes at their annual Beaulieu Mini show but no classes for Fiat 500 or Ford Focus, then I think this proves the point. Not bothered if you have a TMF MINI section or not as I know it would create extra work but if all my occassional MINI posts start getting moved to General Chat then regretably it might be time for me to not bother posting anything of interest on here whether classic or new. :(

The policy is that whilst TMF is MINI tolerant we are not a new mini forum and whilst not tolerating rudeness to new mini owners nor are we actively encouraging them. My first post very politely pointed out that the OP was more likely to get an answer on a new mini dedicated forum. Surely that is helping the OP? Or would you prefer members to ignore queries with the result being that the OP spends £1600 that they may not need to? My post provided information to help the OP, you may wish to note that the response quoting me did not.

I would direct you to look at the various threads regarding this matter. Admin (not the moderators) have stated that there will not be a New MINI section and that the decision is not up for negotiation. At the moment there seems to be a minority of members attempting to witch hunt any comment that can be seen as anti new MINI. If you read my posts again you will see that there is nothing Negative, just reiterating the state of play.

Wise words - personally speaking I love this forum, but there is an element of troublemakers.
