My son has bought a 1991 Mayfair 998cc to renovate, trouble was it came with engine & everything else removed, he has made a good start by renewing all the brakes, ball joints etc., he still has a lot of welding to do before the engine goes back in but meanwhile we are trying to work out where everything connects to make it easier for when we do.

Could any one help with which the pipes go where & where have they come from on the Carb & manifold, I have taken some pics & labelled what we need to know.

Thanks in advance

Hopfully this will help

A & B are water pipes you don't have to connect these. if you do they connect in line with the heater.

C This looks like a vacuum take off for a vacuum gauge. unless you have the gauge blank it off.

D Fuel inlet

E overflow

F Vacuum this connects to the distributer.

Has anyone connected the A & B water inlet/outlets? What if you don’t use them, just cap off?

A & B don't need to be capped.

If you have the original hoses and wish to connect them,  when you have installed the engine, just ask again, and someone will be able to explain how to plumb the pipework.

Does that mean plumbed into the radiator coo.ing system? Unfortunately the engine bay was missing a number of hose bits. Kind of difficult to get an exact layout of each model year’s hose routing. This is an 89. I do t even know exactly how the air filter should be fitted.

Yes, it does mean plumbed into the radiator cooling system.

A heated inlet is not needed in the summer.  Earlier Minis and Morris Minors didn't have it, and even in winter it is not really needed once the engine gets up to full temperature.

Re: the missing bits.  On the clutch end of the cylinder head there should be a ******* / tap / faucet, from which a pipe goes through the bulkhead to the car's heater matrix, and another pipe come back through the bulkhead and connects to a spur on the bottom radiator hose near the water pump / fan.

A photo of your air filter and your carb would help. in case there is something missing.

Didnt the early minis just have a joint in/ex manifold as well?

Yes I’ll provide some more detailed pics. I may be missing a Y fitting. The car is plumbed as you described through the heater and through a valve that is actuated from an interior pull cable. Right now the valve bracket is just floating I’m the engine bay which I know is incorrect. There must be a missing mounting bracket. Again photos may help.

The stubs had corroded on my manifold, and the hoses would no longer attach, so I used a piece of copper tube to bridge the gap. You can just see it in this pic.

I would connect up the hot water to the inlet manifold, bearing in mind where you live; you may suffer carb icing during inclement weather. Vizard says not to, as the charge will be colder; that may be true, but it is no help knowing that in January, with ice in the carb. I did try running without hot water flowing through in the summer once: I did not notice any increase in power or economy.

The little stub C may connect an air valve in the original air filter housing. I have it on my 1990 Cooper.
