Hi everyone

I've recently bought a trike as a project

this is what It looked like when I picked it up

20131013_162214_resized-1.jpg

It is an unknown front end with a mini front sub frame welded to the rear with a couple of bits of pipe attaching the 2

I've spent the last couple of weekends with a mate and an angle grinder strengthening the frame this is where its at now

How are you going to do the gear linkage ? - always wondered

what engine are you going to use ? - you could go for a bike engine conversion ;o)

do bikes need an IVA ?

it really is a blank canvas

best of luck - at least you won't have much rust to worry about

ive got a 998 engine to go into it once I take it apart and put it back together again

im going for the automatic option for the ease of the cable gear change, a manual would have been really awkward to fit as the linkage would be going out the back

its going to need an MSVA once its done

yea completely blank canvas once I get the engine in I can then work out how many seats to fit and where Im going to put things like the fuel tank, radiator and battery

Is the MSVA as hard to pass as an IVA ?

its apparently easier than the iva still takes a lot of reading and re reading the manual

Well it would appear the engine I bought its ******* I got it stripped down to the block, 2 pistons came out fine other 2 are stuck and are now broken (broken but moving), hopefully I can smash them out and rebore the block and fit new ones or just cut my looses on this overgrown paperweight and get another engine

that was a fair few days wasted

its something a little different, even on a trike forum they said they haven't seen a mini based trike for years

I've made a fair bit of progress on the engine the pistons are all out and I have cleaned and painted the block,

today I reassembled the pistons crank cam and the timing chain

I have got to put the dizzy gear back in but I need to look up what way round and at what position in the timing to put it, I saw it on here somewhere just need to look it up again

working on all these mini parts is starting to make me want to do a mini as my next project one problem with that is that my mum has always wanted a mini so it will most likely turn into 2 minis in bits to restore

today I got the engine fitted to the frame I just need to fit a few more mounting brackets to secure it better

next job I think is the brakes, I currently have drums, I'm not sure if I want to keep the drums or upgrade them to discs,

what are the drums like? the trike wont weigh anywhere near as much as a mini

I was going to take some more pictures as an update but I managed to set my self on fire with my angle grinder once I put my flaming crotch out I sort of forgot to take any pictures ill get some when I uncover the trike to do some more bits

to be honest I would stick with drums, I would imagine it would be very easy to overbrake the rear anyway as it wont be heavy at all and you want the front brakes to be more effective than the rear anyway.

You also may be able to mock up a handbrake from using mini rear drum brakes (im not sure how possible it is as you have the driveshafts in the way)

going on the weight of the trike once I service the drums they should be way better than its going to need on the front ive got twin discs of a 600cc sports bike with a larger master cylinder

for the handbrake I have decided to use the parking brake calliper of a 3 wheeled scooter thing and ill mount that to the front wheel the msva says the handbrake needs to be on 1 complete axle so its fine on the front

well done for building the trike correctly, so many times we read you can no longer build a vehicle as the "rules" stop people modifying these days

keep up the good work
