Mpi Flywheel Removal

Best Answer Guess-Works.com , 12 November 2013 - 02:01 PM

Flywheel only fits the crank in one position which is governed by the off centre slot.

Hi All,

Can anyone advise regarding the alleged timing marks on the flywheel that need to be lined up?

I have searched for the marks to no avail and have removed the flywheel to fit a new clutch after setting No1 cylinder to TDC.

What exactly needs to be aligned (aside from the clutch centre) when refitting the flywheel/clutch assembly back on to the crankshaft?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Brian

With MPi's you need to be sure that the centre of the clutch pressure plate ( boss ) is in the correct alignment so that when attached to the flywheel that the reluctor ring is in the right place for the ignition timing.

In the past you could not fit an AP clutch to an MPi flywheel as it would thrown the timing out by 30 degrees and hence you MPi would not start. You had to use a valeo. The upgraded clutch kit from AP is now compatible with the MPi.

If you've not changed the clutch pressure plate and just the friction plate then there should not be a problem..

The flywheel will only fit on the crank correctly one way.

Ah >_< Please tell me there is a simple way to rectify this if, like me you have simply removed the flywheel and clutch without noting which way it was before disassembly.

I had heard about timing marks on the flywheel but when I couldn't see any I simply went ahead and pulled the flywheel and clutch assembly off and dismantled it in order to fit my new pressure plate and friction plate.

I can see the rear of the flywheel now with the reluctor ring as you mention but have no idea how to align it correctly for timing.  :ohno:

I thought mini's were supposed to be simple? Never had to remove a flywheel to replace a clutch before!!!

Someone please tell me this problem can be solved :X

It's not really a problem...

The pressure plate only fits on the flywheel in one place because of the two locating studs. The boss only fits in the pressure plate one way due to the asymmetric arrangement of the fixing holes.

The problems occur when you put a non-mpi pressure plate on an MPi flywheel, as this can cause a misalignment of the timing marks.

What you need to do is compare the two pressure plates ( the old one and the new one ) and how the boss fixes to both, and note the relationship of the slot in the boss, and the two stud holes in the pressure plate where it locates on the flywheel. If they are both in the same orientation then there's not a problem.

Ok, many thanks for that, I feel a little better but wont the flywheel need to go back on exactly as it came off in order to ensure the correct timing of the reluctor ring, or am I over complicating things??

Many many thanks, had a bit of a panic attack there for a while. I really appreciate you taking the time to guide me through it.

Thanks again

Cheers John for looking after us all again.

Just had my own panic, but I hadn’t disturbed the clutch, so can only go together the correct way due to offset key on end of crank shaft.
