I see the mice have eaten half the breather pipe on the rocker cover.

My caps fit the same as yours and I managed to stop them from leaking by installing an O ring between the filler neck and brass collar and making new paper gaskets to go between the collar and cap as the original gaskets had shrunk over 30 years. Also araldited the breather up as it isn't required.

Love the patina on the rocker cover and that you were able to retain it by clear coating it. I do like those chrome filler caps too.

Only a little! Luckily the breather hose goes on far enough to not cause a problem

That looks like a good way to fix them. I'll have a closer look next time I have a chance

Just checked and it arrived from you in April 2017! Can’t rush these things!

There should be some progress on the block later this year if everything goes according to plan... then the other big jobs are getting the crank polished and the head checked over. There’s no hurry on any of this of course as I’ve got a fresh 1098!

I also want to get some A+ 1275 rods as they are a bit more suited to the final spec of the engine than the ones I’ve got now.

Sorry I’ve got a bit behind here! So a couple of weeks ago we had our annual Minis in the Gong show and shine. There was even some rain, which was very welcome at the time!






Since then we’ve had some nice weather for driving, and I’ve been driving the mini to work once a week to get the engine run in. I’m now up over 1000km, so it’s time for a good check over and oil change.


In the last couple of weeks the South African 12G2827 crank was dropped off to the machine shop. It was standard size on both bearing surfaces, which was a great starting point but obviously needed a regrind. It’s the one on the left in this photo, the right one is the 12G82 1098 crank that is in the current engine.


It was ready to collect last week - crack checked and all ok, cleaned up and reground to 10/10 undersize. Big thanks to Jared for the crank!


I’ve also been assembling my twin SU carbs as I’ve always wanted them on the car. There are only a few things left to sort out before I can install them

I've finally got the Butlers spot lamps working with new H3 bulbs and I've wired them in. They'll still need to be aimed to make sure they do something 

 

I also bought another Moto Lita on ebay - for the bargain price of $41 delivered. It has a nice patina    and it came with an early MGB boss which appears to be the same as a mini splines. It looks like 14" diameter, and hopefully with a bit of love it'll come up nice

 

 

When I change to the twin SU carbs I have a couple of vacuum port spacers and my idea is to use two vacuum gauges to make sure the tune is even between the carbs. Before I put them in the car I had to make sure they were reading close to each other. Luckily I have a small vacuum pump in the garage and I was able to connect both gauges with a T-piece and they read within 1"Hg of each other, which is good.
