I was getting a lot of pinging - particularly at 2-3000rpm. I reduced the timing in that area with the blackbox and no more pinging.

Black box? I must have missed something, what are you using?

These are pretty hard to come across! I’m not sure if they’ll fit the later wheels you have?

It’s an Accuspark Blackbox unit. These are now discontinued, but there is a nicer one sold by CB performance which also has a MAP sensor: https://www.cbperfor...dule-p/2013.htm

Mine is a basic programmable timing advance unit - just needs power, ground and then it intercepts the wire from the distributor to the coil. The mechanical advance is locked out and then the unit adds the advance based on rpm and the program.

I’m not sure what to do with it yet. I finished off the first round of polishing this afternoon and I like the look so far. I might just paint in between the fins on the top

That sounds very similar to what we used on Miglia’s in the mid 80’s, the distributor was empty except for the shaft and rotor arm, all the timing was done by the box (an Alfa Romeo ecu iirc), it made the Miglia engines much more drivable.

I haven't had a lot of time to work on the car recently, but I have been enjoying driving it to work once a week when the weather is nice . I'm still trying to finish lots of little jobs that I've been planning for a while.

I finished off the final detail for the Maxrob steering wheel, which was drilling and tapping two M3 threads for the bolts that hold on the horn ring. This was a bit tricky, as I hadn't tapped a thread this tiny for a long while and I had to tap it from the rear side of the wheel due to the dish on the spokes. It's all ready to install now




Another item that had been on the shelf for a while was this Morris 850 badge. I thought it would great on a gear knob, and had a guy handmake this one specially to suit. It looks great, and has a really nice feel in the hand too




While I love the look of the Cooper S airbox, it is really quiet and I thought I'd try something different to see if I liked it. I was looking for some period style filters, and I got these Ramflo filters from a friend. They needed new filter elements, so ordered some replacement foam inserts from UniFilter, as these have a better reputation than the ones from Ramflo


All cleaned up here

Putting them on the car is only a 5 minute job. I didn't notice much of a difference to the sound on the quick drive around the block until I was up over 4000rpm. Next time I drive the car I'll take the AFR gauge to see if the mixtures have changed at all. There is also a pair of stub stacks in the mail from the UK, but they might be a while!

The next detail on the car was to add on the polished Sports rocker cover. I've also removed the PCV system for the moment as I'm going to trial a different setup

What are the advantages of the PCV setup? I've only seen them on Mk1/2s, but the later twin carb cars didn't have them fitted.
