Under the bonnet, boot and floors have now been painted to cover up the original yellow. A harness bar has ben ordered, so when that arrives the new seats and harnesses can be trial fitted and all the grotty old underseal under the arches has been scrapped off and fresh stuff applied. So its pretty much ready for it's new shiny coat of paint booked for the 1st of march.

But it's since developed one or two issues, the first being it taken to either starting or nothing, so I've got to go back through all the engine wiring. The second problem (witch was already known), is the fuel gauge doesn't work. I've pulled the wire off the sender and connected it up using a short piece of spare cable directly to earth and the fuel gauge works. So I set about replacing the sender in the tank with a 'new' one that came with the car. Cue a bucket full of fuel ending up just about everywhere but the bucket and the senders were swapped over, only with exactly the same fault as before.  So I'm not really too sure what it could be? As the wiring and gauge seam ok, as the previous test showed they worked, but with the 'new' sender the gauge still doesn't work.

Probably the sender/fuel tank are not properly earthed.

I've been having a read up on the sender/fuel tank earth. Apparently around the same time the rubber bumpers were added they did away with the separate earth for the sender and instead relied purely on the locking ring and fuel tank to body bolts for the earth. So looks like I have nearly 40 years of corrosion to contend with.

I ended up spending yet another day finishing bits on Saturday. I got the new harness bar drilled and bolted up along with an old 3 legged roll bar similar to those used in the mini. A new seal and locking ring also turned up, so with bucket in hand I slid under and drained the fuel tank yet again and swapped over the original sender that was working on the bench. Refilled the tank and turned to key for the fuel gauge to still not work, but using a short section of wire plugged into the sender wire and earthed to the sender in the tank did show the gauge worked. So at least the sender was earthing through the tank and it just seams both sender I've fitted appear to be duff. just a pain in the arse that I've got to do the job again when the new sender arrives, but then I was trying to save money by avoiding buy parts that weren't needed.

I also had a look at the new seats he'd bought that are similar to cobra classics (my personal favourite) but without the headrests. But like most thing the new seats don't have sliders and the holes on the original sliders don't match up either. Plus as the seats are narrower, even if they did the mounting holes in the floor wold be too far apart. So what I've come up with is welding 2 lengths of 1" box section to the seats and then bolting up the original sliders to those, witch should also help raze them up a bit so they aren't as low. Then once the seats are in and mounted I can then work out were to drill the harness bar for the harness bolts.

It might also be finished and drivable by the end of the weekend. Although there's still a few items that the painter removed and have magically gone missing and I pulled the back of my thigh and knee last week in the pool, so aren't quite as mobile as I would be.
