ive spent days trying to decide on a camshaft but i still cant find anything solid on the swiftune sw5 i currently have a 286 kent cam in but im not happy with it i use the car everyday and its mostly around town and country roads

the specs are as follows

1330 with omega pistons

med lightened and balanced crank

lightened con rods

med lightened flywheel

the gearbox is currently away for repair but it is straight cut clubman gearset with a 3.4 diff

also running lcb and hiff 1 3/4 carb

so i was thinking either sw5 or 286

ive scoured the forums but cant decide so any help would be appreciated

Two completely different cams there.

If you are using the car as a daily and have to deal with any traffic I would have to agree that a 286 isn't the right cam for you.

SW5 is a great cam if you want a smooth idle and plenty of torque, so is ideal for traffic, but may seem very tame if going from a 286.  Not necessarily a bad thing if the 286 was really too much.

There are other options between the two from many different vendors, and you are likely to get many opinions !!

Phil.

For everyday use and this spec I would personally go for a MD266, very flexible motor with good torque spread. If you want a bit more top end power from the MD266 at slight expense of very low speed torque then use it together with higher lift rockers.

I use this MD266 cam in a 1330 pulling 2.9 diff on 10 inch wheels and in a 1293 pulling 3.1 diff again on 10 inch. However these are not using SCCR gearboxes. With a SCCR you may find the clutch gets a fairly hard time in traffic with a 3.44 diff unless you are in a non-hilly area.

What about a piper 270? Very good alrounder, and useable on a daily driver.

Mines a BP270 like this:

I don't recognize the HR code.

The HR270 was the cam they produced in the 80ies-90ies and on big bores engines that was a GREAT traffic cam with enough grunt for some stretch on the B roads

The BP270 has more timing so maybe a little more lumpy

Until a few years ago there was a problem with these cams in the hardening, they eat the cam bearings and lobes wear fast, i've been told they were used to get them tutfrided..i hope they've solved this issues becouse the profiles are quite interesting (31-65-65-31)

No problems with mine and its been thrashed if I am honest. Smooth idle as well. Runs very very nicely. They are also brilliant to deal with. I dealt with Peter in the technical section and went through various options but the 270 came out as the one for me.

Hi

we have a 1275

flowed head 37 mm inlet port

maniflow inlet

maniflow exhaust

HIF 44

9.75 CR

SW5 cam

stranded rockers

just did the cam timing dot to dot

D45 Dissy on points

this car has a two rolls

it is my 22 year old daughters every day car

she drives round town no problem keeps it around 2500 RPM max

the other thing it is used for is a Historic rally car

in the HRCR clubmans rallys

I drive and rev it to 5500 all the time

there is no drama it just will go

i can get it to spin the wheels changing to second

but if you want hairy chested dramer and lots of noise its not the cam for you

Power band on the 270 is 1500-6500rpm, I would guess the Kent 276 is similar.

the sw5 says it has more power than the 286 at low revs but ive seen people put it will wear out quicker has its short duration but hi lift putting strain on the valve gear

I had the same wishlist in a similar specced engine. I bought a 266, mg metro and sw5 before selling them all and buying a Minispares evo1after speaking to simon at Minispares. Frankly, I reckon all of them will be similar in the real world and should all pull from low down.
