Pre A+ 4 Synchro Gearbox Tight On Fresh Assembly

Best Answer Guess-Works.com , 08 January 2014 - 03:45 PM

This does happen and is exactly how I test if a gearbox is going to be ok...

Select reverse and you should be able to turn it by hand on the 1st motion, anti clockwise.

If there's resistance but you can still comfortably turn it by hand then it's ok. If it's a struggle then pull it apart and rearrange the baulk rings so the 'skinniest' is on the 3rd gear ( this is the one which gets squished ) if you do that and it's still tight, then look for an alternative baulkring, either a good used one or another new one for 3rd gear.

This is where having many baulkrings to choose from becomes an advantage.

Have been rebuilding my 1128 gearbox today.

It has new bearings and also new genuine rover baulks.

The layshaft spins freely, the main shaft spins freely, but when you put the two together, the gearbox seems to be a little tight when you turn the input gear anti-clock wise (direction it would normally turn). If you turn it clockwise it spins freely. It also seems to spin freely for the first few degrees of anticlock wise before the baulks stop to turn.

If I push the 3rd baulk ring clockwise against the slot in the selector hub and turn the input gear anti it seems free. The stand off height on the 3rd baulk was 55 thou.

Am I correct in thinking I have done something wrong with the 3rd baulk ring? The only thing I have not done yet is torque up the input gear nut, although it is nipped up, only because it is not the correct input gear for my application.

Thanks Dave

Have you done up the Mainshaft nut and 1st motion shaft nut yet ?

The last one I played with would lock almost solid till they were done up.

The main shaft was torqued up, done the input gear nut now and it seems free now.

Funny how with it undone it only affected it in one direction

Thanks Dave

yeah,

whats happened is when youve tightened it up, the 3rd motion shaft has pulled away from the 1st motion shaft, releasing presure on 4th gear syncro so it free's up,

you can also get tightness from a lack of oil on the syncros.

Torqued the nut up and it now runs freely in both directions now when it's in neutral.

When I select reverse it seems tight to turn again but only seems to be in the anti clockwise direction.

Everything is oiled and there is no diff in it yet.

Thanks Dave
