When the film first came out we (being apprentices at Longbridge) laughed at the differential bit. I thought it was an intentional joke.
Also when the cars fall off the transporter when ramming the doors you will see they are old farina BMC cars!

Your apprenticeship would be my dream

It was fantastic, all a long time ago now 1968 for 5 years. Mini fan inspired by works rally minis to become an engineer. Still playing with minis today. Glad to see that engineers and the motor industry has become important to our politicians again.

The bit that have always wondered is when they are driving the minis into the back of the bus near the end and Michael Caines line is cut suddenly. He says "more speed on the up accelerate and ........" it cuts to the front wheels hitting the ramp and you never hear the rest of the line,

'then slam yer brakes on or we'll be in the cab' :D

I believe the tunnels were actually near Coventry and were newly built not yet in service.

Yes part of the new Coventry sewer system being built at the time.

Amazing work of research and detailed exact locations of scenes from the Italian Job film here:

Crokers Aston that is flipped into the gorge is actually a Lancia

yup the original 163ELT had the SFX explosives go off prematurely, severely damaging the car, so a Lancia Flaminia was sourced and 'Astonified' for that scene!

It was intentional and a running joke at the time.
