I just did mine, very simple job, you'll just need a valve spring compressor, grinding kit and then a head gasket set.....

Is everyone talking about valve lapping or grinding?

I thought that grinding is done in a machine shop to machine the faces of the seats (£25????) and lapping is done with a little wooden stick with a sucker on the end and some paste to smooth out the minor imperfections between valve and seat?

Anyone know?

Like Daveid J says, lapping and grinding are two different things. Your local machine shop should do it for around $25 (theres no pound sign on this keyboard).

If its smoking on start-up, I would say its more likely to be your valve stem seals are worn out, you get new ones in a head gasket set and they look like little black thingies with a small spring around the top. Having your valves re-ground wont hurt tho, but also for about $30 more you could get new guides pressed in too if they are worn.
