I bought this car when I was 16 in the hope of restoring it with a few little subtle touches, the car was in a pretty bad state when I got it. It was from southend and you could tell. The shear amount of bodge jobs from cardboard in the arches covered in filler. Cable tie exhaust hangers. Well after a while I put a new steel front on it half a paint job due to me being lazy and liking the scruffy look. Still with the original 998 which was painfully slow. I drove it for a year with its ups and downs done london to brighton etc without a problem.

this is what it looked like when I picked it up:

then new front:

After a while it now looks like this:

then it was time for a turbo, the proposed spec is as follows:

12g940 head cleaned up and matched
998 pocketed
kent 266 or mg metro cam
duplex timing or belt
hiff 44
metro turbo dizzy
metro plenum
mirrage-esk home make mani
GT17
cozzie 2wd cooler
ali rad

so far I've collected a good amount of the parts only things left to get is the carb, dizzy, cooler and cam.

I really want to turbo my 998 !! Let me know how you get on and how much it costed !

it should be worth it but really think about your set up, try pick the right size turbo and what the application is I'm only using it for the summer so I'm going to run as much psi as i can through it before i build my monster beats 1293. So far it's roughly cost as follows:

12g940 head £60

Gt17 £100 from a friend

ali rad £100

plenum £20

carb hif 44 will cost me £40 hopefully he's still go it mind that (going up in price)

Intercooler £40

dizzy will cost £50

hoses will cost about £30 ish

ex t piece cost £12

90 degree £10

turbo plate will cost £15 for materials CNC'n at uni

flanges £15 for materials same as above

mg mtero cam £30 ish

So far I've spent £500 ish which is roughly what others pay to do a standard but there is more costs like setting up on a rolling road and possible head work etc including balancing and other essentials

.. now there is a update only a little one but ehhh

.. for the right price! got to finish this one first. Should have about well over 90bhp hopefully depends how quickly i want to ruin it really because the bottom end isn't really built up for much more nor is the clutch. I want to run about 10 psi so. I'll get it set up properly on a rolling road, some people might know him Mike Jennings who is very good and was part of some of the vizard series of books. Set up my friends car very well and only heard good things. Very old school so no print out etc can roughly gauge though.

The mini might be on hold for a little while as I've run out of funds and still at uni so. Next on the list is pocketing. I might get it done by someone else but that means fully disassembling the engine so on the re-build be caps, bearings and jazz which i could do without. But i'll see if a machine shop will do it with the box still on. Only thing is the swarf into the bores and such. Any knowledge would be helpful if others have had the same sitch.

Other work to do on the mini goes as follows:

Exhuast from turbo back

engine steadies making new ones, in situe adjustable

re-wire due to a fire a while ago (long story)

new rear wheel cylinders

new tires

get tracking done went through tires like no bodies business

Modify breaks, lathe down to 7.9 and relocate callipers or new 7.5 added

MOT time

tax

aup mate have you welded the flanges on your manifold now ? im thinking of making one but i don't have access to an engine ( well one that im not using that in the mini ) and was wondering what the measurements and angles are to make the gt17 fit without mods

cheers

nahh not yet been bogged down in uni work at the minute when its done I will let you know. Ive still got to double check see if it still fits in with enough clearance. Through the measurements which I took it looks like it will have about 15mm clearance. with the gap of 130mm between the back of the block to bulk head. The big bit which will have to change is the actuator placement it looks like it will be mounted on the manifold with a heat shield and the mani being wrapped in exhaust wrapping. This has been done before but i'm still sceptical. If not there is a few other ways to do it. After the trail fit I will draw it up on CAD for you guys to see. Also be fore that I need to make and weld in the turbo plate. This is really the crural bit which I think will make it fit. All well it being tied in with zip ties but won't know till the end.

Sorry missed this yeah I will, bought the elbow and going to make the rest out of 2" or might have to be 1.5"-1.75 to get past the pot joint.

1978421_10202702695541592_1198264673_o.j

I'm probably going to have to reduce it.

Ive also worked out what sort of compression ratio I'm going to be running, depending on my pocket sizes wit could be 8.0-1 or 8.25-1 which will let me run up to about 12psi on the standard internals ect. So the pistons won't melt.
