I have smoothed my boot on my 93 Mini where the number plate light used to be as I didn't like the large light unit. I wanted to see if it possible to buy a new copy of the smaller mk1 number plate light unit and fit it below my number plate on my mk3 boot lid? I was worried it would hit the bumper?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

The MK1 had a number plate holder that's the light bolted too-

I don't think the light would hit the bumper, as the boot lid straps aren't that long.

Light would never hit the bumper anyway as mk1 number plates holders are on hinges.

Those 'Mk1' number plate lamps were a generic BMC item and have bee nfitted to all sorts of cars over the years! Would look fine on a Mk3 bootlid, it's been done in different ways and usually works out well.

Here's another variation - Cliff Porter's Mk1 Radford Cooper S hatchback has two of 'em...!

Hello chap.

You can fir one on a mk3 boot and it will not hit the bumper.

My MK2 had a mk3 style boot lid with the mk1 light permanently attached.

It does not hit the bumper.

If you want measurements let me know

Indeed the hinged number plate will fit just fine without hitting the bumper. When Andy at ML Motorsport gave my Rover Cooper the MK1 look last year he fitted one of the Minispares repro Mk1 hinged numberplates on the original bootlid, and I think it looks great. The Forum  won't let me link to a Facebook pic, but here's a link to the ML page:

Thanks, I'm going to order a mk1 plastic chrome number plate now and fit it below my number plate.

Hi All,

Jumping on an old post here but how are you fitting the hinged brackets to the Mk3 boot? The original MK1 boots had pre drilled holes that you could screw in to (at least that's what I can gather).

Looking on mini spares these seem to be the fixings but don't look like self tapping so if I drill into the boot lid these wouldnt work.

Thanks
