Hi all.

I hope someone can help me here. I have just bought a 1976 mini clubman and the previous owner devided to take a hammer to the ignition barrel as he snapped the key. I now want to remove the barrel all together and install a flip switch and push button start. has anyone done this before and how.

Many thanks
kyle

I have something similar. I kept the barrel, and installed an ignition switch and push start button in the ashtray of the dash. I had to turn the key twice, flick the switch and then press the button. I don't remember how i did it but hopefully it give you an idea of what is possible.

You have to take a feed from the white wire to one side of the toggle switch, then another feed from the white wire to one side of the push switch, then from the toggle switch down to the coil + and from the push switch to the starter relay

Ideally you put another switch supplying a relay to go from the brown to the white and light green/white so that would then act as your ignition switch. Trouble is your not going to have a steering lock, and although it would be very easy to bypass an original steering lock anyway it would be even easier without one

Amazing Mr Illegal hasn't been in on this but, having been summons'ed for it I can confirm that you are required to have a key switch to prevent the vehicle being started by an unapproved person.

So did you remove the steering lock and use an alternative immobilisation method?
