Thanks to everyone who replied on here.

A quick rub with gun wash and a scorer took the black coating off in an instant, so I am going to do the job properly and strip it all off.

Glad you're sorted. Don't forget that gun wash leaves a residue behind and for best primer adhesion, a wipe with panel degreaser will help

That e coat is a pain especially when you see lots of man hours and get a poor result at the end
