I am right in saying I need the whole mk2 light unit rather than just the lenses?

You do need the entire light unit, the mk2/3 is much smaller all round than the mk4/5 which you have fitted now

tinted rear windows,

Drop it a little on Hi los

possibly a silly question, but how do you even tint windows? is it a DIY thing or not?

It's perfectly possible to do yourself, you get a kind of film to stick on.

Do some youtube searches

will do thankyou!

No worries, just be wary, because they are a different size you will probably see paint fade where the old rubber gasket sits compared to the new rubber gasket used on the mk2/3 units

A quick polish up should do the trick yes! the issue I had with mine was when I refitted the rear lights after a respray when the paint was still soft and it left a marking which shows since changing to mk2 rear lights.

and no to a roofrack in my opinion :)

You don't have the right mini for a roof rack, they only look good on a 1960's rally replica or maybe a van...
