Most of you haven't heard of Jet Motors in Oregon, they're the top people in the northwest US.  I've bought one of their ignition kits.

On their Facebook feed is this 'Bolt on Turbo Kit' in design stage, don't know all the specifics but I mention it because they're a real place who don't mess about.  I asked about the location and they responded:

"For best flow efficiency, pipe routing, and 'most' universal fitment; the turbo essentially becomes part of the header. Plenty of room. The carb will fit at the stock location, with standard intake manifold. The standard exhaust connection will fit directly to the downpipe as well."

Obviously the pics are just for location fitment, nothing really to show just yet, I will see what add'l info can be had.

Interesting, you don't normally see the turbo orientated that way with the cold side on the driver's side. I guess it's due to the fitment and the routing of pipe work due to the gonzo's neck on the plenum if you don't run an intercooler. Any idea what the turbo is? I would guess it's off a diesel as it doesn't have a water cooled core.

Thanks, coopdog!
Yes... It's all tight (after all, it is a Mini), but still has adequate clearance.

James962,
The orientation was decided upon for a number of reasons...

 - No need to modify the wastegate actuator arm.

 - Better exhaust flow from the head. (As the motor is essentially an "air pump", efficient flow is key)

 - Easier / cleaner routing of pipe work for intake (with or without intercooler). NOTE: We WILL be running an intercooler.
 - We will be using a standard HIF44 SU carb, modified for turbo blow-thru conversion. The factory turbo carb has the throttle & choke arms oriented on the opposite side due to the plenum "gonzo" neck. (We will be designing a new plenum).

 - plus a few more that I'm not able to recall..

I'm not willing to give away TOO many details at this moment... however, the turbo is basically a GT15 that was recently developed for a powerplant of our size (1300cc, but can be fitted for a range up to 1500cc). It's not from a diesel... and, most turbo's in my experience are actually not water cooled. (Not to argue... just what I've come across)

We'll keep posting updates on our Website (www.jetmotorsmini.com) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/jetmotorsmini) which is accessible to all even if you don't have a Facebook account. I'll try to keep this post updated as well.

Thank you for your interest!

Sam

Could you elaborate on this please? The Mirage Manifold I have has the turbo the other way around, and from my understanding (seen here in the primitive paint drawings) would be a cleaner path than the design above?

Mirage:

Jet's design (from what I pictured it as from the jig you've made):

Just curious is all

Nice Drawings! Great question...
The issue, that we saw, was more about the outside ports colliding into each other (ports 1&4) before finding their way out. Plus, a small amount of buffeting as the air hits the wall in the outside corners.
I tried my hand at some MS Paint...

Mirage_airflow_zps4ce39fce.jpg

Our manifold will have the outside runners flow into the center branch, (more like an upside-down peace sign).

As it's "forced induction", the above mentioned are minute... but still relevant.

Our primary objective was to have a product that would be for the most part "bolt-on", without bulkhead or turbo modification.
The Mirage manifold design has always been one of our favorite. We are just hoping to improve upon it.

Thanks for the interest!

by the way - One of the other guys here at the shop, saw your pictures from a distance... and questioned what I was looking at.  :shy:

this looks interesting. one query though:

are you purely developing a new mirage-esque exhaust manifold or will this develop into a comprehensive kit ? (i.e. manifold, turbo, intercooler, plumbing, fuel pump (feed+return too) and possibly an ecu harness)

it would be nice to see a true turbo kit on the market in the future :highfive:

My understanding is that this is a top-to-bottom comprehensive kit, heard this from the owner Jeremy Thorpe.  Probably not an ecu.

Jet builds high-end cars for us in the States - Opcons, Eatons etc.  They're a relatively new shop started in 2008 by some old pros.  Dwight's Opcon wagon below uses Jet's custom Pertronix kit I have, and it really screams.

I know Jeremy from when he visited California a few mos ago with this gent you may recognize, and they drove my car together for a documentary vid... an experience I'll never forget, and a finer gentleman I'll never meet.

Pictures of the prototype under way, somebody beat me to it!  The release timeline is, they told me, "when it's perfect".

That downpipe is a work of art! The manifold, however, isn't. Looks like its had no thought to exhaust pulse or scavenge where they all meet.
